Lockdown silica gel canister dehumidifiers are one of the most popular gun-safe dehumidifiers on the market.

They’re designed to help protect your guns and other valuables from rust and corrosion by absorbing moisture from the air that’s inside your gun safe.

In this Lockdown Silica Gel Canister Dehumidifier Review, I’ll be going through the installation process, the pros and cons of this safe dehumidifier, and giving you my input on whether this gun-safe dehumidifier is a rust prevention option that’s worth investing in.

The silica gel beads inside the canister absorb moisture from the air, helping to keep your gun safe dry, and free from moisture damage.

Personally, I don’t feel that this is a large enough container to take care of my gun cabinet, but for a cabinet that is a smaller enclosed space such as the one that I store my ammo in, this works great.

The canister can be placed anywhere inside your gun safe and will work silently to keep it moisture-free. I find that my preferable spot is on the top shelf and around 3-4 weeks after installation the moisture absorber gel beads change from a yellow to a green color which indicates that it’s time to recharge these gel beads.

Recharging the desiccant dehumidifier doesn’t refer to it needing or having batteries that need recharging, personally, I like to use the term resetting the desiccant beads. Resetting or recharging the beads essentially means drying them out from the moisture that they’ve absorbed over the past few weeks. To reset the beads you’ll need to put the canister into an oven at around 225-250 degrees for 3-5 hours. If you like, you can also spread the beads out on a cookie or baking sheet which will allow the beads to recharge faster.

I’m not a fan of these types of gun-safe accessories, as I feel that the resetting/recharging process is tedious and time-consuming, not to mention handling a hot canister at the end of the process isn’t fun.

For my firearms, I prefer to install an electric dehumidifier rod such as the Golden Rod. In the case of my ammunition, it’s a small safe in which I can’t fit a dehumidifier rod so I’ve opted for a desiccant dehumidifier. So I still use the options with silica beads as well as the Hornady reusable canister dehumidifier.

The Lockdown Silica Gel Canister and the Hornady canister are both great options as gun-safe dehumidifiers for anyone looking for an effective and affordable gun-safe dehumidifier.
