Merck & Co.’s Januvia, a popular diabetes drug, was found to be contaminated with a potential carcinogen.
An impurity called a nitrosamine was found in some samples of the drug, which has the chemical name of sitagliptin, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday. The agency said it was permitting Merck to continue to sell drugs containing sitagliptin with higher-than-allowed levels of nitrosamine in order to avoid shortages.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt has announced a Cabinet reshuffle to improve his administration's performance as it faces towering economic challenges stemming largely from Russia’s war in Ukraine. The Cabinet shake-up was approved by the parliament in an emergency session Saturday. It affected 13 portfolios, including health, education, culture, local development and irrigation and tourism ministries. The changes, however, didn’t affect key ministries including foreign, finance, defense and the interior, which is responsible for the police force. Egypt’s economy has been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine, which rattled global markets and hiked oil and food prices across the world.
American forward Konrad de la Fuente has joined Greek club Olympiakos on a season-long loan from Marseille. The 21-year-old winger struggled with playing time in France and had season-ending knee surgery in early April. He finished with one goal and three assists in 23 appearances. Regular playing time in Greece could provide De la Fuente with an opportunity to earn a roster spot with the United States for the World Cup, which starts Nov. 20.
Poland’s environment minister says laboratory tests following a mass fish die-off detected high salinity levels but no mercury in Central Europe’s Oder River. The minister said analyses of river samples taken in both Poland and Germany revealed the elevated salt levels. She says comprehensive toxicology studies are still underway in Poland. The Oder River runs from the Czech Republic and along the border between Poland and Germany before flowing into the Baltic Sea. Some German media had reported the river might be poisoned with mercury. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki vowed Saturday to do everything possible to limit the environmental devastation. Poland’s interior minister said a reward would be paid for help tracking down those responsible.
Thousands of U.K. train drivers have walked off the job in a 24-hour strike over jobs, pay and conditions, scuppering services across much of the country. The walkout is the latest in a spreading series of strikes by British workers seeking substantial raises to offset soaring prices for food and fuel. Weekend workers, soccer fans heading for games and families heading for the seaside are among those having to change their plans on Saturday. Railway staff held a series of one-day strikes in June and July and plan more walkouts next week. Postal workers, lawyers, British Telecom staff, dock workers and garbage collectors have all announced walkouts for later this month.
Barcelona says that Nico González has agreed to a contract extension, but that the promising midfielder will play this season on loan at Valencia as he seeks ensured playing time. The 20-year-old Nico agreed to add two years to his contract and is now linked to Barcelona through 2026 with a new buyout clause of 1 billion euros ($1 billion). Dutch financial prosecutors say they have detained a man suspected of involvement in “concealing criminal financial flows and facilitating money laundering” through the virtual currency mixer Tornado Cash. The financial prosecution service FIOD said in a statement released Friday that the 29-year-old man was arrested Aug. 10 in Amsterdam. The suspect’s identity was not released, in line with Dutch privacy regulations. Mixing services combine various digital assets, including potentially illegally obtained funds and legitimately obtained funds, so the holders of illegally obtained assets can obscure the origin of stolen funds.

Egyptian authorities say a vehicle accident in the southern province of Minya killed at least nine people and injured 18. They say the crash took place on Friday when a passenger microbus overturned following a tire blowout on a highway in Minya. Ambulances rushed to the site and moved the injured to hospitals. Deadly traffic accidents claim thousands of lives every year in Egypt, which has a poor transportation safety record. The crashes and collisions are mostly caused by speeding, bad roads or poor enforcement of traffic laws. Earlier this month, a microbus collided with a truck in Sohag, killing at least 17 people and injuring four.

Ukraine’s health minister has accused Russian authorities of committing a crime against humanity by blocking access to affordable medicines in areas its forces have occupied since invading the country 5 1/2 months ago. In an interview with The Associated Press, Ukrainian Health Minister Viktor Liashko said Russian authorities repeatedly have blocked efforts to provide state-subsidized drugs to people in occupied cities, towns and villages. The World Health Organization says it recorded 445 attacks on Ukrainian hospitals and other health care facilities as of Aug. 11 that directly resulted in 86 deaths and 105 injuries. But Liashko said the much higher number of casualties caused by damaged roads and bridges delaying ambulances “cannot be calculated.”

Salman Rushdie's agent says the writer is on a ventilator after being stabbed in the neck and abdomen on a western New York stage where he was about to give a lecture. The 75-year-old Rushdie was flown to a hospital and underwent surgery after Friday's stabbing at the Chautauqua Institution. His agent, Andrew Wylie, said the writer had a damaged liver, severed nerves in an arm and an eye he was likely to lose. Rushdie's novel “The Satanic Verses” drew death threats from Iran’s leader in the 1980s, Police arrested the man who attacked the writer and identified him as 24-year-old Hadi Matar of Fairview, New Jersey. Matar's lawyer declined to comment.
Iranians are reacting with praise and worry over the attack on novelist Salman Rushdie — the target of a decades-old fatwa by the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini calling for his death. It remains unclear why Rushdie’s attacker, identified by police as Hadi Matar of Fairview, New Jersey, stabbed the author as he prepared to speak at an event Friday in western New York. Iran’s theocratic government and its state-run media have assigned no motive to the assault as well. Japanese weather officials say Tropical Storm Meari is unleashing heavy rains on the main island of Honshu as it heads northward toward the capital, Tokyo. The Japan Meteorological Agency said Saturday that Meari made landfall in Shizuoka, southwest of Tokyo, bringing sudden heavy rains and blasting winds, and prompting warnings about mudslides and flooding. More than 72,000 people in the area’s main city of Shizuoka were told to evacuate due to possible landslides. The storm is expected to continue northward and hit Tokyo in the evening. Warnings on flooding, strong winds and heavy rainfall were issued for the Tokyo area.
Italy’s worst drought in decades has reduced the country’s largest lake to near its lowest level ever recorded. Tourists flocking to Lake Garda on Friday for the start of a long weekend found a vastly different landscape than in past years. An expansive stretch of bleached rock extended far from the normal shoreline. Northern Italy hasn’t seen rainfall for months and snowfall this year was down 70%, drying up rivers like the Po that farmers use to irrigate their crops.
