Somerset County events for the beginning of June

Memorial Day will be observed at 9:30 a.m. at the Somerset County Courthouse at the annual ceremony sponsored by the Somerset Memorial Day Committee. This year’s guest speaker will be Michael Knapp, Ph.D. of Hooversville. He received his commission as a regular officer in the United States Army and served more than 25 years active duty. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at Allegheny College of Maryland and as the Director of Technical Solutions at Szanca Solutions in Bedford. The Somerset County Honor Guard and Rifle Squad will present the colors and perform a 21-gun salute following the traditional wreath-laying ceremony. The Rev. Matthew Deal of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Somerset will offer the invocation and benediction. The Somerset Area High School Band and choral ensemble will perform patriotic musical and vocal selections. This year, the American Flag will be presented posthumously to the late Pennsylvania State Rep. William Robert “Bob” Bastian. Bastian served as a member of the United States Air Force between 1966 and 1968. Somerset Troop 131, Cub Scout Pack 131 and Friedens Troop 152 of the Boy Scouts of America will raise the colors and conduct the flag-folding ceremony and presentation. The Somerset Memorial Day Parade will commence immediately at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Monday in the Union Cemetery, New Centerville. Laurie (Hall) Knepper, Lt. Col. (Ret.) U.S.A.F., N.C., will be the guest speaker. Guest soloists will be Andrea (Illar) Flacheck and her brother, Frank Illar Jr. Welcome by Graydon Miller, mayor of New Centerville. Prayers by Keith Grimm and Jennifer Pettett, the chaplains of the Sons and Auxiliary of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. Taps will be played by Frank Illar Jr. and David K. Weyand, both of New Centerville. Gun salute by Rockwood American Legion Post 279. The Color Guard will be members of Mt. Union Church Camp 502 and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, both sponsors fo the service.

In case of rain, the service will be moved to the New Centerville Church of God.

The 2022 Memorial Ceremony at Patriot Park is at 7 p.m. May 29 at 6150 Lincoln Highway, Stoystown (U.S. Route 30, just west of the Flight 93 entrance). Guest speaker will be Lt. Gen. Walter E. Piatt, director of the Army Staff at the Pentagon. Music will be performed by Danny Conner and Bellwood Community Choir. Bring along a lawn chair.

The club will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Laurel Arts Building. Anyone can attend.

The Grand Halle on Broad Street will feature The Red Line String Quartet in Concert at the third performance of the new Grand Halle Chamber Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. May 26. The Red Line String Quartet’s cellist Robert Kaufman, violist Stephen Weiss, and violinist Tobias Chisnall are regular musicians with the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, including Stephen as the Principal Violist and Tobias as the assistant concertmaster. The Red Line String Quartet released its first album “Turn” in Fall of 2021.

Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center open-air concert series on the rooftop. Jackie’s Garden Works Concert Series is every fourth Saturday in May through October. Doors open at 6 p.m. and music starts at 7 p.m. The concert series is hosted in Jackie’s Garden Works — rooftop terrace atop of the ArtWorks Building, 413 Third Ave., Johnstown. The rooftop garden includes a large deck, native plant garden, a pergola, and a live flower feature wall. May 28 — Rachel Allen & Friends. The Somerset Area High School Class of 1972 will hold its 50th year class reunion July 2, at the Somerset Country Club. Happy Hour with a cash bar will be from 4:45–5:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., a class photograph will be taken, and at 6:30 p.m., a buffet dinner will be served. At approximately 9:30 p.m. the Somerset Community fireworks can be viewed, weather permitting, from the golf course at the Somerset Country Club.

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County 7th season of the Coffee House Series, hosting indoor/outdoor musical events, will be taking place outdoors on the Center’s Amphitheatre. During inclement weather, the Coffee House will move from the Amphitheatre to indoors in the main space gallery of the Goldhaber-Fend Fine Arts Center building. The Coffee House Series will be providing coffees, teas, and delicious baked goods for purchase during the event. All Coffee Houses start at 7 p.m. and run roughly until 8:30 p.m. June 3 is Midnight Graffiti. Midnight Graffiti is female fronted classic rock’n’roll music featuring Natalie Kurchak and Laken Noelle on lead vocals, John Kurchak and Bernie Kralik on lead and rhythm guitar, John D. The Community Arts Center of Cambria County 2022 Summer Arts Camp offers themes geared for Camp Create Mini-preschool, Camp Create-school age (elementary and middle school), and T.A.P.-teen art project camps. Summer Arts Camps begin June 6 and will continue for nine weeks with multiple camps running throughout those weeks in June, July and August. There will be a total of 27 camps in nine weeks. Campers can attend half day for Camp Create Mini-preschool, full day for Camp Create-school age, and full day for T.A.P.-teens.

The 5th annual five-day Log Art Theatre Academy-musical theatre camp is developing the full production of "High School Musical Jr."in one week. July 18–22, Monday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with two performances on July 24 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the Atelier and Studio — second floor of CACCC. Musical theatre camp is offered for ages 8-18.

The second Rodney "Rodster" Howsare Memorial Cornhole Tournament is June 11, at Brooklyn Hunting Camp. Sign up between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Blind draw. Tournament starts at 4 p.m. Entry fee includes food. Proceeds benefit the Rodney's Brotherly Love Foundation, helping people throughout Somerset County.

The Berlin Volunteer Fire Department annual Craft and Vendors Fair is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 11, at the Berlin Block Party lot.

A service project of the Friends of the Meyersdale Public Library, this free electronics recycling event by JVS Environmental is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 11, in the Meyersdale Area Elementary School parking lot. They will accept free of charge, computer equipment, video game consoles and TVs if intact. There is a $50 charge to take TV sets with broken glass. They will accept for a fee, florescent bulbs and car batteries, dehumidifiers, refrigerators and air conditioners. No vacuum cleaners or small appliances.

The monthly Ligonier Night Market will kick off its 2022 season at 5 p.m. June 16, around The Diamond and along Main Street in historic downtown Ligonier. The event enables shoppers to buy fresh produce, farm-raised meats, craft-made beverages, and other food products from more than 30 local farmers and food processors. Live musical entertainment also is provided on the Diamond Park bandstand.

The Ligonier Country Market (LCM) and the Ligonier Valley Chamber of Commerce co-sponsor the Night Market, which will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month through September. The Community Arts Center of Cambria County is musical theatre to Log Art Theatre in 2022 with “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” a production filled with toe tapping, sing-along songs. The production will include high energy dancing numbers and audience interaction. The show will be the debut production in the Community Arts Center’s M. Josephine Paul Family Museum, which doubles as a black box theatre, 1217 Menoher Blvd., in the Westmont section of Johnstown. Performances are: June 17, June 18, June 24 and June 25 at 7 p.m.; June 19 and June 26 2 p.m. (matinee).

Live music, street dances, food vendors and activities every day during the Windber Miners' Memorial Day Weekend, June 16-19. Events include Father's Day Car Show and Cruise-In noon-5 p.m. June 19, in Windber. There will be 26 fun awards presented at 4 p.m. Judging by racing stars from the local speedways. The Community Arts Center of Cambria County (CACCC) will be hosting a Bright Star Touring Theatre production of The Little Mermaid at 6 p.m. July 29, in the Atelier upstairs multipurpose room. This production is free, but tailored for grades three-six and includes bully prevention themes and character education emphasizing literature. Attendees are encouraged to register ahead of time; limited seating available and there is no guarantee that there will be seating available at the door. The Mountain Playhouse returns to the stage May 25-29, with "Always ... Patsy Cline." Tickets are available by calling the box office at 814-629-9220 x100 or 24/7 online at www.mountainplayhouse.org. All performances will be at the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. At this time, masking is optional. The show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in l961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death.

The Community Arts Center of Cambria County’s Log Art Theatre Academy auditions for Aladdin (a play) at 6 p.m. July 27 or July 28.Children and youth ages 9 through 17 years are eligible to audition. Rehearsals will take place during August and September, culminating in a three-day stage production, at 7 p.m. Sept. 16, and at 2 p.m. Sept. 17 and 18. TheAladdinproduction will include a free Log Art Theatre Academy Performance Workshop that focuses on basic theatre concepts, tools and techniques to enhance characterization, character dissection and back story creation, improvisational skills, monologue and line delivery development, and the use of historic and economic status to transform. It will engage all levels of proficiency, while educating the participants on the history of the current show in production. Tryouts will include a monologue/reading audition. No singing or dancing required, and no preparation required; all materials will be provided for those auditioning at the auditions. Those auditioning will find out what part they have been cast as after auditions.
