SHANGHAI, Jul 22 (SMM) - The 7th China International New Energy Conference 2022, hosted by the SMM (Shanghai Metals Market), has come to a successful end last week. Over 2,000 industry experts and guests participated in the conference, and people provided their perspectives on a variety of topics regarding the most recent trends in the new energy industry, including new energy batteries and their materials, power battery recycling, new energy equipment, and technologies as well as international new energy industry chain.

Speech topic: Multi-Dimensional Analysis and Prospect of Global Battery Supply and Demand from 2022 to 2026

Speaker: Mei Wangqin, Research Manager of SMM New Energy Industry

In 2022, the global total sales of new energy vehicles are expected to be 10 million units, up 54% year-on-year. By 2026, the global total sales of new energy vehicles will reach about 25 million units, with a compound annual growth rate of 26% in four years.

SMM believes that there are three factors for the sustained growth of NEV.

First, countries and local governments have given strong policy support to the industry, including China's previous subsidy policy, purchase tax reduction and exemption, dual-credit policy, and various measures taken by many local governments during the pandemic outbreak, for instance, the shopping vouchers, and the subsidy policies of European countries, as well as the US act to strengthen the subsidy policy of new energy vehicles.

Second, the rapid layout and penetration of global battery companies and car companies improve the travel convenience of new energy vehicles, and the cost efficiency and intelligence of NEV become higher. Besides Tesla, the sales of new models launched by BYD, GAC, SAIC, XPeng, Lixiang, NIO and other car companies are constantly improving.

Third, with the vigorous promotion of policies and markets, consumers' acceptance of new energy vehicles has been further improved, and factors such as rising oil prices also boost the sales of NEV.

The global energy storage market ushers in rapid growth in 2022, and the total demand is expected to be 54GWh, with a year-on-year increase of 80% and a compound annual growth rate of 49% in the next four years.

From 2022 to 2026, in the global lithium battery market, the demand for power batteries and energy storage batteries will increase significantly.

According to the current global lithium battery market, SMM predicts that the demand for power batteries and energy storage batteries will increase significantly from 2022 to 2026. The compound annual growth rate of the power battery market will be about 37%, and that of the energy storage battery market will reach 49%, and that of the consumer market will be about 16%.

In 2022, the output of LFP batteries will increase, and it is expected to reach 39% in 2026, among which the overseas demand for LFP will grow rapidly.

According to SMM estimation, the global lithium battery production is expected to reach about 2,700 GWh by 2026, among which the proportion of LFP batteries will be 39%.

In the European markets, in 2021, the proportions of ternary cathode batteries were as high as 100%. By 2026, the proportion of LFP batteries will rise to 28%, and that of ternary cathode batteries will be squeezed to 70%.

It has become a consensus to achieve emission reduction and carbon reduction to cope with global climate change.

With global warming and the greenhouse effect becoming more and more serious, it has become a global consensus to achieve emission reduction and carbon reduction to deal with climate change.

In September 2020, China's carbon target was put forward clearly at the 75th UN General Assembly. China strives to achieve the peak of carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and realise carbon neutrality by 2060, which is a solemn commitment to the international community.

In the next 30 years, Uruguay, Finland, the European Union, California, US, France and other countries and regions will strive to achieve "carbon neutrality".

Wind-solar power generation - an important way to decarbonise electricity

According to statistics, as the global installed capacity and proportion of wind and PV electricity generation continue to increase, the cost of power generation keeps decreasing.

Coordinated development of renewable energy and green hydrogen is a feasible way to reach “dual-carbon” target

But in fact, in China, nearly 50% of carbon emissions cannot be solved by the decarbonisation of electricity. In this case, the coordinated development of renewable energy and green hydrogen has become a feasible way to support the "dual-carbon" strategy. By producing green hydrogen through renewable energy, renewable energy can be used in the terminals.

The centralised treatment mode covering pre-treatment, crushing, granulation, coating and shaping of raw materials can greatly reduce the floor space of a workshop and the logistics cost, and at the same time, the centralised treatment of dust and flue gas can effectively improve and enhance the working environment of the workshop. In addition, it can also centrally control the production and reduce labour cost.

By comparing box graphitisation furnace, Acheson crucible furnace and lengthwise graphitisation furnace, the power consumption of box graphitisation furnace is the lowest, and that of lengthwise graphitisation furnace is the highest, and its product is evenly heated, which is not affected by the heating speed. However, the temperature of the box graphitisation furnace is affected by the spacing between box plates, the temperature at both ends, the temperature at the edge, etc.

Speech topic: Typical Application of “Prominent” Measurement and Control Instrument in the Production Process of New Energy Cathode Materials

Speaker: Sun Yulin, Product Technical Engineer of Prominent Fluid Controls (SHANGHAI) Co., Ltd.

According to different cathode materials, lithium batteries can be divided into lithium ferrite batteries, LCO batteries, LMO batteries, LFP batteries and ternary lithium batteries.

Ternary lithium battery refers to a lithium battery with nickel, cobalt, manganese or nickel, cobalt, aluminium as the cathode materials, graphite as the anode material and lithium hexafluorophosphate as the electrolyte. Advantages: Smaller volume, higher capacity density, the resistance to low temperature, and better cycle performance, which is a mainstream material for NEV battery.

The ternary lithium battery is named after its cathode materials that contain three metal elements such as nickel, cobalt, manganese (NCM)/ nickel, cobalt and aluminium (NCA).

The preparation process of NCM precursor

At present, the main method used is coprecipitation: adding three kinds of solutions into a high-speed stirred reactor, and accurately controlling the pH value, temperature, reaction time and other parameters in the process to obtain the required compound, that is, the NCM precursor.

Speech topic: Technical and Development of Ternary Cathode Materials for Lithium Batteries

Speaker: Lei Tianqi, R&D Manager of Hefei Gotion High-tech Co., Ltd.

In 2021, the shipment of ternary cathode material in China was 430,000 mt, up 80% year-on-year. Squeezed by LFP materials, the market share of ternary cathode materials decreased from 46% to 38%.

Affected by the product stratification, the ternary cathode material market is less concentrated. The shipment from Ronbay Technology still maintains the highest, with the concentrate rate of CR3 being 38% and that of CR5 being 55%.

The product portfolio is still dominated by 5 series materials, which, hwoever, has decreased from 56% to 46%, and the proportion of 8 series high-nickel materials has rapidly increased from 24% to 36%.

Development of Ternary Materials - High-Nickel (Advantages and Challenges)

The purpose of high-nickel is to improve the energy density. The eg orbital of Ni has little overlap with the 2p orbital of O, and the electrons can be completely lost in principle. Therefore, it is considered that the higher the nickel content is, the higher the gram capacity of the material will be.

High-nickel materials face many challenges in the application, including poor thermal stability, high residual alkali on the surface, and multiple phase changes during charge and discharge, which lead to the deterioration of cycle performance of high-nickel materials.

Speech topic: The Establishment of New Energy Green System under the Background of Dual-Carbon Strategy

Speaker: Yu Ying, a Professor-Level Senior Engineer of Grinm Croup Corporation Limited

Development Requirements of New Energy under Dual-Carbon Background

China strives to achieve carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. Accelerating the development of new energy sources is an important path to achieve carbon peaking and neutrality as well as to build a new development pattern. In recent years, the development and cpplication of new energy represented by wind power, photovoltaic, energy storage, electric vehicles and hydrogen energy has been expanding.

Although the new energy industry is a typical green and low-carbon industry, some industries, especially upstream raw materials, are still energy-intensive. New energy enterprises should further promote green and low-carbon development across the entire chain and help to achieve carbon neutrality by building a green manufacturing system.

Speech topic: Global Energy Supply and Security: New Pattern and New Strategy

Speaker: Li Bingwen, Director of Strategic Market and Product Management Department of Jiangsu Trina Solar Co., Ltd.

European and US Carbon Tariffs Forced China to Accelerate its Low-Carbon Transformation

New design of US carbon tariff: From punishing low carbon prices to punishing high carbon practices.

Basic logic: Levying a carbon fee on imported products whose carbon content exceeds the baseline, that is, the average carbon content of US products.

Determine the carbon content of imported products: The average carbon intensity in the industry of the country of origin. If the data is unreliable, the average carbon intensity in the country is adopted.

Imposing carbon fee on both high-carbon US and imported products: Starting from 2024, if the carbon content of the US and imported products is lower than the baseline, there is no need to pay a carbon fee. Otherwise, a carbon tax of $55/mt will be levied on the excess carbon content. The carbon tax standard rises by 5% every year.

Products: Energy-intensive primary products, including fossil fuels, refined petroleum products, petrochemical products, chemical fertilizers, hydrogen, adipic acid, cement, steel, etc.

Carbon baseline: The US Treasury will calculate the average carbon content of each US product and use it as a baseline. From 2025 to 2028, the baseline will be lowered by 2.5% annually, and from 2029, the baseline will be lowered by 5% annually.

The imported products applicable of carbon tax extend to the downstream: In 2024 and 2025, the import carbon tax will only apply to energy-intensive primary products. But from 2026, the product range will extend to the downstream.

Speech topic: Current Situation and Development of LFP Technology

Speaker: Yue Haifeng, Vice President of Research Institute of  Changzhou Liyuan New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.

Yue showed that according to incomplete statistics, by 2025, the global lithium battery capacity planning will reach 4,725 GWh, of which the planned capacity of Chinese enterprises will be 3,900 GWh. LFP batteries will have a huge development space in the future. In order to improve the low-temperature performance of LFP batteries, it is necessary to find good resistant materials. It is reported that the safety and cycle life of ternary materials blending with LFP No. 1 are better than those using high-nickel materials alone.
